Medical applications:
Vitamin E is an antioxidant that helps to protect the body from harm. Vitamin E inhibits the oxidation of polyunsaturated fatty acids (cellular membrane components) and other oxygen-sensitive substances such as vitamin A and vitamin C. In premature newborns, vitamin E deficiency can induce irritability, edema, thrombosis, and hemolytic anemia. Oxidative agents have been associated with creatinuria, ceroid deposition, muscle weakness, lower erythrocyte survival, and increased in vitro hemolysis in adults and children with low blood tocopherol concentrations.
